Home.

Home is a hard thing to define but always felt, unhinged to the material and found in the heart. It isn’t always where everything works because we could be in a place that makes complete sense but still something is missing…

Tarkwa Bay is my home, a place where where everything is alive, where the ocean meets the sky, where the waves sound like whispering roars, where the Sun rises just for me, where the Moon stays to watch me sleep, where the wind finds my skin, where I heard my soul sing, where I shed my thickest skin, where my heart healed it’s broken pieces, where I confronted my fears and where the water takes my tears. It is also home to a lot of people, most of them born and raised here while others like me, came here and never left.

I thought my home was a safe place, far enough away from the painful blows of our broken country Nigeria that only paralyzes those barely able to walk. Two days ago, military men raided their way through the town with guns and batons violently removing entire families from their homes, no one knew why, all they did was pack up their entire lives in that moment because their homes were about to be demolished. So everyone took everything they had and came to the beach front, the only part of town that was safe and slept on the sand with their children and everything they had left. Yesterday, most people loaded their lives onto a boat and left with tears in their eyes, a few are still stranded here with no where to go and no place to return to while others are doing everything they can to find a new home.

Hearts are heavy for the many that now live like refugees on their own land — homeless, hungry, lost, paralyzed and hopeless because of our broken country… but we can be their hope with the compassion in our hearts and help them get back on their feet.

We are in the process of finding new homes for the families that lost theirs with the hope of positive long term impact starting with the Soussou family, my mother donated a portion of her land in Gbetu Lekki with a partially complete structure and we’re raising funds to fix it up and maybe even get the kids back into school. Please see our attached plan for the Soussou family. We will be working in phases and will share updates with you alongside detailed financial breakdown as we complete each phase.

Phase 1: Provide home, water and electricity.
Phase 2: Help with job and education.
Phase 3: Setup mini farm so they can grow some of their own food.
Phase 4: Approach organisations to give health insurance for family.

Also, there is no food or water in the community as markets and shops are closed so if you want to give to stranded families and displaced residents still on the island to help them with transportation, food or water, we are more than willing to give to them on your behalf.
