University Councils and their Employees

I have always argued that the Councils and the Vice Chancellors have not pulled their weight in the governance of our universities’ governance. The council’s powers are enormous, and they have the most significant roles in finance, governance, development and employee management.

Section 15 of the Federal Universities of Technology Act provides as follows.

If it appears to the Council that there are reasons for believing that any person employed as a member of the academic, administrative or professional staff of the University, other than the Vice Chancellor should be removed from his office or employment on the ground of his misconduct or of inability to perform the functions of his office or employment, the council shall:

a) Give notice of those reasons to the person in question:

b) Afford him an opportunity of making representations in person on the matter to the council.

So nobody can be fired in our Universities without the approval of the council. Not even the Vice-chancellor. Honourable Justice K.D DAMULAK affirmed this in a judgement delivered on the 24TH of October, 2022 at the National Industrial Court in Akure between MR. BUKOLA AYODELE DUROJAYE as claimant and FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AKURE & ors.
