What is a pitch

A pitch is a vital part of any professional or organization’s communications. For start ups the pitch is what they rely on to quickly communicate their mission, vision, and product. Organization’s typically have pitches as well, but we will be focusing more on the importance of pitches for start ups. Regardless of the setting, a pitch is typically a 30–60 second description of the business. It covers the following:

where

why

Lets examine them more closely. The who, is the target market. Businesses are able to maximize success by focusing on a specific segment versus the whole market. Not everyone is going to have a need for the product or service so you want to maximize profits by serving a specific need. The what is your product or service. In a pitch you may mention you have properitarty technology or intellectual property that differentiates your product or service from everyone else. If you are offering something new you would describe how it works. The where refers to how you would be creating sales. Are you a brick and mortar business or does sale/business take place online. Lastly, the why covers your mission, vision, and values. It also extends to what motivated you to start the business. The pitch is helpful for when you need to solicit funding from investors or are meeting new people and you want to share your business with them. There are times that you will have a longer pitch. Typically this will happen when you are looking for a large investment or a loan. In these cases your pitch will typically be accompanied by a Power Point or Business Plan and cover more details that are vital to a bsuiness. These can be things like financial projections, cost of product production, and potential competitors.

For every startup or potential busienss you start a pitch is one of the most important things for you to have. It will help you rapidly communicate and convince people that you will be successful. All you need is 30 second.
