Our autism journey

They say what goes around comes around, and here I sit in a loop. Owen goes through phases, and as soon as I think it is done, here it is again. Before I understood any of this, and some days I still feel like I’m in the dark, Owen would cover his head with everything. Anything, and everything he could get his hands on he would find a way to put on his head, or wrap it around his head. For years he wasn’t allowed to sleep with blankets of any kind. Nothing at all in his crib, and then bed. At a point I was scared of him having a sheet on his bed, because I was afraid he would somehow figure out how to get it off, and then put it around his head. Now he doesn’t want to wear hats, or hoodies, but occasionally he will leave them on if his teacher puts it on him. There’s a rules set for that, as well, I’m sure. But now I sit, once again, watching my child try to wrap things around his head; more so in his sleep. One day at a time I tell myself, as I take the deep breaths. When he woke, he ran immediately, sitting in the window. He can see the bus stop from where we live. He started saying his teacher’s name. I told him that it was Saturday, he wasn’t going to school. He immediately started crying. I moved on quickly. I told him today was our day. He said, “bowWing”, followed by his beloved coffee shop. I told him we would go later in our day. It was not even six yet, but he was ready. He’s used to the early starts. He ran to get his tablet, pulling up his school apps. If he can’t go to school, then school will come to him. We’ve moved on from our morning. Getting ready to start our adventures for the day. Trying desperately to keep him from learning anything else from those monkeys that are always jumping on the bed. Sometimes you come full circle, but there might be lots of starts, and stops along the way. Cherish the good times, find strength in knowing you are not alone, and keep pushing forward. Life is what we make it, so let’s make it grand. Smiles to all and donut daze!
