Assistant Branch Manager Interview

As a young adult that is relatively new to the workforce, it can be incredibly challenging to find a career path that is a good fit. Fortunately, interviewing professionals that work in fields you may be interested in is a fantastic way to gather information that isn’t necessarily accessible to the general public. Here is an example of how a typical interview would go for me; in this case I am interviewing the assistant branch manager at a bank.

What skill do you think helps you the most in your job?

“My job definitely requires a lot of communication skills; whether it’s with customers, my higher-ups, or my coworkers, I am constantly communicating with people”

What parts of your job do you find most challenging?
What do find most enjoyable?

“It is very challenging for me, and honestly probably for most people, to remain calm and level-headed when customers get angry with me over something that I have no control over. However, my favorite part of my job is when I can help a customer understand something that is confusing to them, especially when it helps their overall financial health.”

Are there any negatives to your job?

“Honestly, there really aren’t many negatives to my job specifically. There are days when I would rather have the day off, or I’m faced with an especially tough day of work, but that’s going to happen anywhere you work.”

Could you please describe the typical kinds of writing you do and tell me a bit about each?

What do you find most challenging about your day-to-day writing? What challenges do recent graduates face as they move from “academic writing” to “workplace writing”?

How would you describe the balance between written and oral communication in your workplace?

What qualifications do you seek in a new hire?

“As far as skills I would look for in a new hire go, it’s definitely advantageous to have customer service skills as customer service makes up a great deal of the work they would be doing. I would also want them to be organized and friendly, if someone is unorganized I have a hard time trusting them to come through on an obligation and if they’re unfriendly I simply would just not want to work with them.”

Would the work involve any lifestyle changes, such as frequent travel or late-night business entertaining?

“In my line of work there generally aren’t many lifestyle changes, unless you were hired at a location that you would be required to live closer than you currently do.”

What skills or talents are essential to being effective in your job?

“It sounds strange but having coaching skills is very helpful for me to be effective. As a part of management I am required to help my employees sharpen their skills, whether they be sales, customer service, or organizational, it is part of my job to ensure they can use those skills to succeed.”

How did you learn these skills? Did you enter this position through a formal training program?

“I actually used to work part-time as a trainer/coach with a youth hockey team while I was in college. There really wasn’t any formal training that I did to develop skills that I didn’t already have.”

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

Overall this interview was very insightful for me. Although I may not necessarily be looking for a job as an assistant branch manager, it was helpful to be able to see what type of communication I might expect in a professional environment, and how skills I have developed over the years can be used in a business setting even if they are not necessarily business-related skills.
