Three Valuable Creative Lessons I Learned Last Week

Behind the scenes on my forthcoming web series “BFTS.”

Do you run a creative business? Do you have a creative side hustle you are trying to turn into your main hustle? Do you just need a little encouragement and inspiration? Here are a few things I’ve encountered this past week that stuck with me.

As creative people, we are often distracted (and motivated) by stories of outliers. The stories of overnight success, or people who cast their career aside in pursuit of passion and struck gold. This is a path but it is not the most typical path. Keep your day job and you will enjoy more creative freedom. Success is a long game and separating your financial goals from your creative goals will help you win long term. Serve your Muse, not your bills.

Whatever it is, you need to put the hours in and build the habits — even if the hours are only 20 minutes. Absorb the thing you create into the fiber of your being and you will take those incremental steps toward mastery.

Friends, love, video games, March Madness, extra time figuring out what to eat…resistance comes in many forms. Resistance is fear putting logical, enjoyable, and often very rational barriers (distractions) in the way of our productivity. Shut them out or put them in their proper place. Quiet your mind and prioritize the meaningful tasks that help achieve creative goals then claim the width distraction as a reward for maximum effort.

Thanks for reading. Come back again soon.
