How Important is the Result of Your Goodwill

If it makes the recipient worse off, was it bad to do

A friend of mine was lamenting about not knowing what a street person might do with money. It’s a common dilemma causing people to buy a meal or clothing instead.

He told me a story about someone he helped long-term. This was an individual (we’ll call him Jack), who he helped get addiction counseling, found a home, and spent money on food and clothing.

In spite of his assistance, Jack is back to where he found him: homeless and addicted and refusing further help.

“What was the use?” my friend groaned.

I don’t like to give advice when clearly someone just wants to get something off their chest. My wife taught me that. Sometimes people just want people to listen. They’re not looking for solutions or your opinion.

But in this case, the parable of The Good Samaritan came to my mind. In case you’ve never heard it, here it is:
