Player Profile

Age: 23

Position: LHP

Mets Prospect Rank: #12

Drafted: 2015 (Round 5 — Mets)

In the 5th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, the New York Mets selected left-handed pitcher Thomas Szapucki with the 149th pick. Originally from Toms River, New Jersey, Szapucki moved to Florida in middle school where he eventually became one of the top high school prospects at William T. Dwyer High School.

Prior to being drafted, Szapucki committed to the University of Florida. Widely considered to be a first-round pick, Szapucki saw his draft stock drop as teams feared he would not sign after his commitment to the Gators. The Mets couldn’t pass up his talent and took a chance on him in the 5th round. New York was able to sign him for a signing bonus of $375,000.

After signing, Szapucki appeared in a handful of games in the Gulf Coast League. In 2016, Szapucki started the season in the Appalachian League with the Kingsport Mets. In 5 games there, Szapucki allowed just 5 runs during his 29 innings pitched. He struck out 47 of the 114 batters he faced in Kingsport and quickly earned a promotion to Brooklyn.

With the Cyclones he started 4 games, compiling an ERA of 2.35 over 23 innings. He continued to carve up batters and struck out 39 of 91 hitters faced in Brooklyn. His season then came to an unfortunate halt when a back injury shut him down for the season.

After a shoulder injury delayed his start to the season, Szapucki pitched his 2017 campaign in Columbia. With the Fireflies, Szapucki started 6 games where he managed to strike out 27 batters over 29 innings. Szapucki’s season was then cut short again when he began feeling discomfort in his pitching arm. Szapucki would then undergo Tommy John surgery that would end his season and cause him to miss all of 2018.

After a nearly 22 month stretch, Szapucki returned to the mound in 2019 where he started the season in Columbia. He picked up right where he left off, dominating batters as he struck out 26 batters over 21.2 innings pitched.

Szapucki quickly was called up to St. Lucie where he made 9 appearances in 2019. With St. Lucie, Szapucki continued to impress with his high strikeout rate. He compiled a rate of 10.5 strikeouts per 9 innings, striking out 42 batters over 36 innings pitched. He then received the call to Double-A Binghamton where he made one appearance before closing out the season.
