The Biggest Lie We All Tell

It destroys marriages, careers, friendships… Here’s what we can all do about it.

Be honest — we all tell lies, and we’ve all told some pretty big whoppers at one time or another. It’s human nature. It’s fear.

The biggest lie we all tell, though, isn’t something we tell another person; it’s a lie we tell ourselves. And somehow, even though we’re the ones lying to ourselves, we still believe it… hook, line, and sinker. We hold onto it like it’s some sort of holy grail, as if letting it go will make the Earth crack its jaws wide and swallow us whole, as if its poison, its pain, is actually some kind of nourishment.

It’s time, though. I’m tired of this bullshit, and I bet you are too.

“Ding-dong! Ding-dong! Ding-dong!” Our doorbell chimed across the house. It was the little cuties from down the street. “Our party’s starting!”

“Ok sweetie, we’ll be down in a minute.” And with that, the girls sped off into the darkness like sprinters winning a race.

We followed them down our street, lined with candle-lit bags. Lighting luminarias on New Year’s night is a neighborhood tradition in my town. And on my block, cider and cookies always follow.

This was our first year joining the tradition.

A gathering of shapes stood in the road out front of the girls’ home. I could barely make out faces, but I could still see their mother, Lea’s, broad smile as we approached. “Hey! Welcome… glad you could make it!”

She stood huddled in her long black coat and red scarf, fingers wrapped tight around a cup of hot cider.

“For you, my dear…” Rigby, her husband handed me a cup of my own. It smelled amazing with heated notes of cinnamon or cardamom or nutmeg, maybe all three, filling the air. Something made me wait, though, kept me from taking my first sip. I shivered. The brisk night surrounding us had already entered my bones, and I found myself gratefully gripping my hot cup as tightly as Lea.
